I met up with Clarissa and her husband for her mini-maternity session while she was in her third trimester. I’m foggy on how many weeks along she was at this point. She requested a beach shoot. Mini-maternity sessions are offered complimentary with my birth packages. Its 30 minutes, one location, one outfit and 15 gorgeous images for you to treasure long after you are done being pregnant.  They were such an in-love, affectionate couple to work with. So excited to meet their little girl! And I can’t wait to be there to capture her birth.

I’ve had the privilege of being featured in the recent issue of Your Pregnancy South Africa Magazine! I’m delighted that they are sharing more real women’s birth stories that represent the many different ways women choose to birth. All photos and the story contributed with permission of the mother. Its a great keepsake to show her daughter one day.

My clients have told me they needed their husband holding their hand and involved, not fumbling with a camera.

The experience of welcoming a child into the world is not just important for the mother, but the father as well. Bonding happens in those first few moments for him too. Often a dad is so overwhelmed with emotion or shock or awe that he forgets to even take out the camera (that was my husband!).

Most mothers prefer that if she’s being attended to post delivery or there’s been an Caesarean, the father stays with the baby. She often misses all these little moments.

I discreetly, quietly, barely speaking a word pay attention to capture his reactions and experiences too. No asking for a pose (unless he wants to) or getting in the way of your private moments. Let him focus on you and the baby. This only happens once in his life. I’ll get the photos.

Baby A is just 6 days new. Her brother 6 years old. I joined this family for a relaxed lifestyle newborn shoot in their home. Mom specifically wanted photos with her two kids so we involved the whole family. Originally this was supposed to be a first-day session, but it was delayed a few days due to her hospital stay so we made it a newborn session. She’s a beauty and welcomed into a lovely family. Here are some images from their session:
