My sincerest apologies to your ovaries, because this sweet chubby baby goodness is gonna make them explode. I could barely stand it. She’s gorgeous isn’t she? When I arrived for Léa’s newborn shoot (oh, if you missed it first go see her birth and maternity sessions), her mom had gathered all these beautiful pieces for her session. I don’t normally pose babies as my style is much more lifestyle, but I love to include meaningful pieces to a session. The different lace are family bridal heirlooms and the metal plate was her grandmothers. And if you would believe it, we placed Léa down and she slept like this. It came together all too wonderfully.

Newborn sessions like these are relaxed. If you just had a baby and would rather not take them out for a studio session, this is the perfect fit. Its intimate because its your home and your surroundings. I offer these sessions either as an add-on for birth clients or as a part of maternity-newborn packages. Contact me for a packages & availability if you would like something like this.

Here’s Léa’s session with a look behind the scenes at the end of the post. Thanks to my assistant Stephanie for those from her phone!

Sometimes when a woman is about to give birth, all kinds of emotions come up and the heart processes things that “seem” unrelated to birth. But that’s not true. Its a mystery how a woman’s heart perpares for her baby, but a mystery to be respected none the less. As Bronté laboured, she told me about the unspeakable losses their families had faced. When I think back to her labour, I think of this tender vulnerability. Birth is such a sacred space to hold with a woman and no two women go through it the same.

The moment they meet their daughter, I will never forget the words ringing in the room, “That’s my baby! That’s my baby!” It gives me goosebumps to think about. I wanted those words woven into their story (be sure to see the video) so that Léa would know. That switch to motherhood, the recognition and calling out of her as her child. It was really powerful.

Thanks to Léa’s parents for hiring me and trusting me during one of the most emotionally vulnerable times in their lives. I enjoyed walking this journey with you. May she continue to be a gift to your whole family and bring joy where there has been sorrow.

All images shared with 100% family permission as I do with all clients. If you missed it, see their maternity session here. And once you are done, come see their newborn session. Full pregnancy to parenthood packages are available to capture your whole journey.

I met Bronté and her husband at Blouberg beach for their mini-maternity session.  This beach is not just iconic for Cape Town, it holds so many memories for them. I was surprised to learn Bronté made that floral headpiece herself! The night was strangely still and not windy, the sunset couldn’t be beat. It was just ideal in everyway. Many thanks to my assistant Megan on this one. To be able to go so far onto the beach with a low tide meant she was on gear-gaurding way back on the dry part of the beach. I loved working with this couple to tell their full story from birth to newborn.

Mini-maternity sessions are offered complimentary with all my birth packages. Its 30 minutes, quick for the men (like ripping off a plaster), one location, and 15 gorgeous high quality images for you to treasure long after you are done being pregnant. Here’s the radiant Bronté:

Be sure not to miss page 14 with another one of my client’s birth stories. To both of them, thank you for not only inviting me into your birth space but empowering other women with your stories & images.

Sue & JP Duminy become parents and graciously share some of their photos with the world. Welcome to the world beautiful Isabella, you are so loved. What a pink beauty with full cheeks and all that hair! My personal favorite moments in their video was how lost in their own world they were first looking at Isabella while still on the operating table. The room was full of people and yet theirs was a sacred space as a new family. Secondly, don’t miss about 3:01 mins into it, and watch how dad takes in his little girl. That moment of video, you can see in his eyes he is falling in love. I am always aware to capture what a mom might be missing out on in these mircro-moments. Your parents thank God for your life, and that flows in every expression of how they wanted your day captured including a song that praises Him for you.  I hope these photos always serve as a reminder of how overjoyed your parents were with you from the start. And many thanks to the Duminys for entrusting me with capturing their once-in-a-lifetime and much anticipated day.

Thank you to Dr. Miempie Esterhuizen and Dr. Marlena du Toit Ingelyf and all of the Panorama Mediclinic hospital staff for welcoming me as this family’s professional birth photographer.

Shared with family permission as always and each story is tailored for each family’s unique journey.
